Remember when y’all got hyped up about that PUBG $2 million tournament? Good times.
Epic Games, developer of the outlandishly popular battle royale game Fortnite, announced tonight it will be entering esports with full force. To support the competitive scene of its quickly growing game, the developer will pour $100,000,000 (that’s $100 million, folks) into the prize pools in the 2018-2019 season.
“We’re getting behind the competitive play in a big way,” Epic Games said in a statement. “We plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game.”
What does that mean for the game and its esports scene exactly is yet to be revealed, with developer anticipating more big announcements in the next few weeks.
$100 million in prize money over a single season will put Fortnite at the top of an esports pyramid — it would become the game with the second most distributed prizes ever, just behind DOTA 2 (with $141 million) and ahead of other, more established titles like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive ($53 million) and League of Legends ($52 million).
For Epic Games, however, it might be just another day at the office, with the developer reportedly making $223 million off their game in March alone, according to research by SuperData.
What this means for the future of battle royale esports and what kind of impact will it have on the competition (looking at you, Bluehole) is yet to be seen. PUBG Global Invitational with $2 million in the prize pool is set to kick-off in about two months.
