No more guesses, no more rumors — we’ve finally got to know the place where the first CS:GO Major of 2020 will be played. This one will take place in Brazil, and more specifically in Rio de Janeiro, while ESL will be responsible for its organization.

Thus, for the first time in history, this event will take place in South America. After four years, however, the Major will be played out under the ESL One tournament series banner. This was the last time the status of this series was held in mid-2016 during ESL One Cologne 2016. “Intel is excited to bring such an important ESL tournament to Brazil,” admitted in an official statement Carlos Augusto, director of marketing at Intel’s Brazilian branch. “The gaming and esports market has grown steadily in recent years, not only in Brazil, but also around the world. However, we are continuing our mission of investing and developing the best gaming products focused precisely on this industry.”

Significantly, ESL One Rio 2020 will be the key stop of the ESL Pro Tours cycle and one of the installments of the Intel Grand Slam series, whose prize is a round one million dollars. “We’re extremely excited and proud to organize the next Major in Brazil,” said Ulrich Schulze, Senior Vice President of Product at ESL. “Our goal is to provide pure esports moments to the most engaged fans from around the world and reward them for creating a unique experience on many levels. Bands from every corner of the globe have a chance to get promoted and reach the finals, so we hope that the meetings will be amazing and the audience as loud as never before.”

Everything will start between April 26 and May 3. This is when regional Minors will take place, in which 32 teams will perform in total — eight for each of the four regions, i.e. Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States, North and South America and Asia. These teams will be selected on the way of online eliminations and during the LAN struggle in Rio they will fight for the pass to the Major. Eventually, two teams from each of the Minors will get a promotion, and two more, which will have to compete for the ticket during the play-in tournament from the third place.

ESL One Rio 2020 will take place between 11 and 24 May and will provide its participants with a total prize pool of $ 1 million.
