In the November AMA, presented by the team’s sponsor VIE, Dignitas coach Halvor “vENdetta” Gulestøl came to answer the burning questions presented by the fans. vENdetta discussed his change of career in esports, adjusting to being a coach, the newcomers to the team, and the future ahead of them.
After benching Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” Alesund and Richard “Xizt” Landström back in September everyone’s attention fell on the newest members to join the team. Dignitas opted for two younger, less experienced players, Haris “H4RR3” Hadžić and Ludvig “HEAP” Alonso, as well as a new coach — vENdetta. After a rough start incorporating the new players, Dignitas showed promise at Flashpoint 2 defeating c0ntact and forZe to make their way to the playoffs.
“Any time you incorporate new players into the team it’s going to be a lengthy process,” vENdetta said in the AMA. “There are fine details you need to iron out and [H4RR3 and HEAP] come from a very different background of Counter-Strike, they are used to doing things a certain way. It might be better or it might be not as optimal but you have to find that golden middle ground, where they are comfortable enough to be able to perform at a high level while also doing things that make sense within the team.”
Asked whether it’s harder to bring in less experienced players the coach didn’t hesitate. “They are being implemented as any other players would be,” he said. “Of course it’s very different with its own upsides and downsides.”
“When you are dealing with very experienced players there are certain things that just happen naturally, there’s no need for micro-management. But the experienced player might also have that comfort zone which would limit their playstyle and by extension the team’s playstyle. The new players are fearless, which allows us to do things differently than we have in the past.”
